THE KIND VOICE.

Most of us carry a narrator who speaks to us all day — and rarely as kindly as we'd speak to a friend. This week's ten minutes practise a different tone. Not affirmations, not pretending: just accuracy without cruelty.

The Session · 10 minutes

Changing the tone, minute by minute

Read it through once, set a soft ten-minute timer, and let the structure carry you.

0–1 min

Arrive

Sit comfortably, feet on the floor, one hand resting on the chest or lap. Eyes closed or soft.

"For ten minutes, nobody needs anything from me — including me."
1–3 min

Settle and listen

A few longer exhales. Then simply notice the narrator — the commentary running under the day. No fixing yet; just hear the tone it's been using.

3–6 min

The friend's voice

Bring to mind something from today or this week that felt hard, clumsy, or unfinished. Now describe it to yourself the way a good friend would — honest about the facts, warm about the person.

"That was a hard moment. Anyone would have found that hard. And it's one moment, not the whole story."
6–9 min

Three quiet wishes

Rest a hand where it feels natural and offer yourself three simple phrases, one breath each: May I be at ease. May I be patient with myself. May I remember I'm still learning. If the words feel awkward, let them — awkward and true beats smooth and empty.

9–10 min

Close, and pass it on

Think of one person you'll see soon and silently offer them the same three wishes. Then a deeper breath, eyes open, and back to the day — same narrator, slightly better manners.

"The voice comes with me everywhere. I might as well train it."
Between Sessions

Five micro-pauses for real life

Thirty-second tone corrections, scattered through the week.

  1. The friend test

Catch a harsh inner comment and ask: would I say this, in these words, to a friend? Rephrase accordingly. Same facts, better tone.

  2. The mistake pause

When something goes wrong: one hand briefly on the chest, one breath, and the sentence "that was hard — I'm learning." Then carry on.

  3. The mirror word

Once a day, one genuinely kind and true word to the person in the mirror. Brief eye contact included.

  4. The silent send-off

Passing a stranger — in traffic, in a queue — silently wish them a good day. Oddly, the wisher benefits most.

  5. The evening thanks

Head on the pillow: thank two parts of the body that worked hard today. Feet and hands are usually owed the most.

The Weekly Plan

If kindness to yourself feels undeserved

You don't have to feel deserving for the practice to work — you only have to do it. Tone first; belief tends to follow at its own pace.
